The Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit of the parish of St. Anthony was initiated in February of 1977.  At its inception there are curious facts that, because they are interesting, are worthy of mention here. 

      Knowing how it is customary that no matter where an Azorean goes, he always takes with him in his luggage the tradition and the spirit of Faith, and devotion to the Holy Spirit is the one which most vividly accompanies him to the distant lands of his adopted country.

   Without any exception and the example of what had already been fulfilled in so many other communities spread out throughout the world, the same happened in the Portuguese community of Pawtucket.  Other Brotherhoods already existed throughout New England when the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit began in the parish of St. Anthony in Pawtucket.

      In its beginning there is a fact and two names that we believe should be noted.  As many immigrants of past and present times, José Gonçalves Moules and his wife Rosa Silveira left the island of Terceira to make their home in the United States of America in search of a better life.  As is obvious, they brought with them that belief already known to all of us.  They came here to unite their destinies, in North Providence-Smithfield area they settled and started a family.  In 1930 they went back to their homeland, not only to visit relatives and reminisce about the land where they were born, but also to fulfill a vow to the Holy Spirit through a grace obtained when José was seriously ill.  

    They went to the island of Terceira and in the church of their village, Saint Bartolomeu, they fulfilled their promise to give alms of bread and meat to the entire village and hold a coronation ceremony.  After having spent the summer there, and on their return to the United States they brought a crown of the Holy Spirit that was to be given to the church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Providence.  Moved by the enthusiasm that was generated with the new parish of St. Anthony and with the influence of family members, they offered the crown to the church of St. Anthony in Pawtucket with the wish that it would be accorded the proper veneration.  During several years, the crown remained in the church without anything special being noted, other than a simple ceremony allusive to the Holy Spirit that some parish priests celebrated on the Feast of Pentecost.  In 1967 with the arrival of the Reverend Father Freitas to the parish, the crown was then used more frequently when, annually on the Feast of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost), Rev. Father Freitas held a coronation ceremony in the church with the children usually, a boy and a girl would be crowned for being the most outstanding in learning their catechism.  Ten years later, in 1977, therefore, as there were no other active organizations in the parish (the Society of the Holy Name and others had ceased to exist), Rev. Father Fernando Freitas, also from the Azores and knowledgeable about the culture of the Portuguese people, their traditional values and their religious spirit, had in mind that an organization based on devotion to the Divine Holy Spirit, combined with the strong popular traditions of the Portuguese, especially the Azoreans, could become an important asset for the parish. 

     By chance or by fate, a parishioner, Franciso Ernesto Vieira, a native of the island of Faial, had a promise to fulfill to the Holy Spirit and contacted the parish priest to obtain permission to perform the coronation and use the new parish hall for the traditional “celebration”.  Francisco Vieira not only managed to bring together many people, including family and friends, in a joyful atmosphere, but also revived in the spirit of those who present this devotion and tradition that is particularly dear to all.

     Given this atmosphere of enthusiasm, and around an idea that everyone had in common, someone thought that this celebration should continue.  The idea, which was supported by many, was taken to the parish priest as a suggestion and it was then that, on February 27, 1977, Rev. Fernando Freitas, with a group of good will parishioners, met in the new parish hall to plan the first feast of the Holy Spirit in the parish. The plans having been made, a committee of eighteen men was instituted, and Francisco Ernesto Vieira was selected as the first “Mordomo” (the person in charge of the celebration for one year).

     From that time on the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit of the parish of St. Anthony has been progressively moving forward.  Annually and throughout the years successive committees have kept it going strong.  From one year to another we have seen it grow and each time with much splendor and enthusiasm to the point where it is one of the most active in this region.  Its annual feast on the Labor Day weekend has been an attraction for many people who come from near and far to see it.

   The Brotherhood has its own Statutes, and it appoints a group of members who continuously help the “Mordomos” to carry out the traditional festivities.  The Brotherhood has become an important financial support for the parish in the measure that with the proceeds of the annual feast, with the sale of “pensões”, the auction of cattle and other gifts, as well as the proceeds from others feasts that it organizes during the year it collects a good sum of money that the parish has used to take care of its administration.

     A special note of thanks to all the “Mordomos” and to the people who have been on the administrative board and or committees, and who have lent their talents, work, and dedication.

•                Primeira festa do divino Espírito Santo

A Irmandade do Divino Espírito Santo da Paróquia de Santo António foi iniciada em Fevereiro de 1977. Na sua origem há factos curiosos que, por serem interessantes, se tornam dignos de serem aqui registados.

     Sabendo-se como é habitual que, para onde que vá um Açoreano leva sempre consigo na bagagem a tradição e o espírito de Fé, a devoção ao Divino Espírito Santo é aquela que mais vivamente o acompanha para as terras distantes de adopção.

    Sem excepção alguma e a exemplo do que já se havia realizado em tantas outras comunidades espalhadas pelo mundo, o mesmo aconteceu na comunidade portuguesa de Pawtucket.  Outras Irmandades já existiam pela Nova Inglaterra quando surge a Irmandade do Divino Espírito Santo da paróquia de Santo António de Pawtucket. 

       Na sua origem há um facto e dois nomes que achamos merecerem ficar registados.  Como muitos imigrantes de outrora e dos nossos dias. José Gonçalves Moules e sua esposa Rosa Silveira deixaram a Ilha Terceira para se fixarem nos Estados Unidos da América à procura de melhor vida.  Como é óbvio, traziam consigo aquela crença de todos nós já conhecida.  Aqui vieram a unir os seus destinos, na área de North Providence-Smithfield se fixaram, e constituiram família.  Em 1930 foram à sua terra natal, não só para visitar parentes e matar saudades da terra que os viu nascer, como para cumprir um voto a Divino Espírito Santo por graça obtida quando José se encontrava gravemente doente. 

     À Ilha Terceira se deslocaram e na velha igreja da sua freguesia, São Bartolomeu, cumpriram a promessa de dar esmolas de pão e carne a toda a freguesia e fazer uma coroação.  Depois de terem lá passado o verão, de regresso aos Estados Unidos trouxeram uma coroa do Divino Espírito Santo que se destinava a ser oferecida à Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário em Providence.  Movidos pelo entusiasmo que se gerava à volta da nova paróquia de Santo António e sob influência de familiares, ofereceram a coroa à Igreja de Santo António em Pawtucket, com o desejo de lhe ser prestada a devida veneração.  Durante vários anos a coroa permaneceu na igreja sem que algo de especial se registasse, além de uma simples cerimónia alusiva ao Divino que na festa de Pentecostes alguns párocos realizavam.  Em 1967 com a vinda do Rev. Padre Freitas para a paróquia, a referida coroa passou a ser mais usada quando anualmente no dia da Festa do Espírito Santo (Pentecostes) o Rev. Padre Freitas fazia uma cerimónia de coroação na igreja com as crianças, normalmente um menino e uma menina das que mais se distinguiam na aprendizagem da doutrina.  Decorridos dez anos, em 1977, portanto, como não houvesse na paróquia outras organizações activas (a Sociedade do Santo Nome e outras haviam-se extinguido) o Rev. Padre Fernando Freitas, também Açoreano e conhecedor da cultura do povo português, dos seus valores tradicionais  e do seu espírito religioso, tinha em mente que uma organização baseada na devoção ao Divino Espírito Santo, aliada às fortes tradições populares do portugueses, especialmente do Açoreanos, poderia tornar-se um valor importante para a paróquia.

      Por casualidade ou força do destino, um paroquiano, Franciso Ernesto Vieira, natural da ilha do Faial, tendo uma promessa a cumprir ao Divino Espírito Santo, contactou o pároco no sentido de obter autorização para fazer a coroação e utilizar o novo salão paroquial para a tradicional “função”.  Francisco Vieira não só conseguiu reuniar muitas pessoas entre familiares e amigos, num ambiente alegre, como reavivou no espírito dos presents a tal devoção e tradição de todos muito particularmente querida.

     Perante aquele ambiente de entusiasmo e em torno de uma ideia que todos unia em comum, alguém pensou que se deveria dar continuidade a semelhante festa.  O alvitre que teve apoio de muitos foi levado ao pároco como sugestão e foi então que, a 27 de Fevereiro de 1977, o Rev. Fernando Freitas, com um grupo de paroquianos de boa vontade, se reuniram no novo salão paroquial para planear a primeira festa do Divino Espírito Santo na paróquia.   Feito o planeamento foi instituida uma comissão de 18 homens, tendo ficado nomeado para primeiro Mordomo, Francisco Ernesto Vieira.

     A partir daí a Irmandade do Divino Espírito Santo da Paróquia de Santo António tem vindo a movimentar-se progressivamente.  Sucessivas comissões tem vindo anualmente a garantir a sua subsistência através dos anos.  De ano para ano temo-la visto crescer e cada vez com mais brilho e entusiasmo ao ponto de se ter tornado uma das mais activas desta região.  A sua festa annual no fim de semana do “Labor Day” tem sido atracção para muita gente das redondezas que aqui anualmente se deloca.

     A Irmandade tem Estatutos próprios e constitui-se com um numeroso grupo de Irmãos que sucessivamente vão auxiliando os Mordomos a realizar os tradicionais festejos.  A Irmandade tem vindo a tornar-se um importante suporte financeiro para a paróquia na medida em que, com o produto das festas anuais, com venda de pensões, arrematação de gado e demais ofertas, e ainda o produto das outras festas que organiza durante o ano,  tem vindo a arrecadar importante soma em dinheiro que a paróquia tem usado para fazer face às despesas da sua administração.

     Um bem haja e um especial agradecimento a todos os Mordomos e às pessoas que tem feito parte das sucessivas direcções e comissões pelo seus talentos, trabalho e dedicação.
